Espresso. Around the Form

During the upcoming concert in the Espresso series at MuFo, the chamber musicians of Sinfonietta Cracovia will present a mesmerizing work by the American master of minimalism, Philip Glass—String Quartet No. 2 “Company”—in which the rhythm takes center stage, emphasizing the piece’s uniform, pulsating sound structure. This will be counterbalanced by Arvo Pärt’s emotionally distinct “Psalom,” a composition that exemplifies his signature “tintinnabuli” technique (from the Latin for “little bell”). In contrast to the motoric quality of Glass’s quartet, time in “Psalom” is, in a sense, expanded and suspended, and the subdued, tension-free harmony lulls the listener into a state of deep meditation.

The event is part of the opening weekend of the exhibition “Zofia Kulik. Instead of a Sculpture. Footnotes.” The exhibition encourages viewers to approach contemporary art without expert knowledge—with curiosity and an open mind. At its center is Zofia Kulik’s 1971 graduation project, in which the artist created a projection of approximately five hundred slides instead of a traditional sculpture. It is complemented by “Footnotes”—the result of several months of work by the Open Working Group, which collectively explored the artist’s work and sought a language for discussing art that excludes no one. Visitors can also participate in creating the exhibition themselves by adding their own thread to the loom provided. The concert will be preceded by a conversation with Monika Kozień, the exhibition’s curator. The ticket price includes a cup of coffee and admission to the exhibition!
